The Fall Equinoix and CBD by Nurse Lauren

We have reached the autumnal equinox, where the light and the dark meet as equals and everything begins its slow descent into the winter months. It is a time where we are invited to listen to the cues of mother nature and slow down, honoring the natural rhythms that occur not only outside of us but also within us. You see, we are not separate from nature, far from it. Our bodies are the piece of earth we have been trusted to steward, to nurture and honor through all of the transitions of life. It seems that society at large has forgotten that all of its participants are at base human animals with very real needs related to the cycles of the seasons. Ignoring these ebbs and flows, as unnatural as that is, can lead to unwanted results. Forcing a creature to go against its nature always yields something unnatural. It is important to remember that stress, illness, and disease are not your birthright.

We are perfectly designed by a higher power to flow with all of the forces of nature that surround us. When we ignore these cues we set ourselves up for a litany of maladies that arise when things are out of balance. The good news is we are surrounded by guides in the form of plants. Plants are always loyal to nature and can help us remember how to be loyal to our nature as well. The creator’s design is so perfect that we can engage with these plant teachers in many different ways, as our bodies and their bodies are capable of communication with each other. We can consume the plants and their compounds are absorbed and utilized masterfully by our bodies. These molecules soothe our nervous systems and help to bring them back into alignment with nature, yielding a remembrance within our cells of our original design. How magical is that?

CBD is a molecule that occurs naturally within the beautiful plant teacher and ally we call cannabis. She has lived alongside humans for millennia, her DNA has been intermingled with ours through cultivation and usage for an estimated 10,000 years. When genomes develop parallel to each other over time there tends to be an ease of interaction between them that can be thought of as a sort of kinship, hence our friend and teacher cannabis has been guiding us for millennia. This time sensitive relationship means our human genome reacts predictably to her medicine, yielding predictable results. She provides calm redirection for our often overstressed and overstimulated nervous systems by adeptly binding to neurotransmitters within our bodies and reminding them that they are safe to slow down and relax. CBD attaches to 5-HT1A serotonin receptors in the brain, which helps lower anxiety and improve mood in a way similar to prescription anti-anxiety medications, but because she provides natural molecules, there are far less risks of complication with cannabis. CBD also lowers activity in the amygdala, the part of the brain that controls fear, panic, and the sudden "fight-or-flight" survival response. She is a friend and ally that your genome, which existed far before you and will exist far after you, has known for ages.

There couldn’t be a better time than the autumnal equinox to engage with your plant allies and remember how to slow down. They are always here for us when we need them, just like a loving friend should be. As a human being it is your birthright to flow with nature and rest when you need rest. Let the remembrance of this fact bring you closer to the original design that was intended for you by the loving grace of the creator of all things. You were never meant to be separate from nature, you were meant to be held by her.  Start your healing CBD regimen today!
